About this case
Former Quebec taxi permit owners allege that the province’s 2019 abolition of the taxi permit system amounted to disguised expropriation and that they were entitled to additional compensation based on the permits’ market value. The class received an additional $141 million plus interest at the Quebec Superior Court, but the Quebec Court of Appeal overturned that ruling; the plaintiffs have filed an application for leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada, which has not yet decided whether to hear the case.
