The Innu Nation and lead plaintiff Gregory Rich allege that former Innu day-school students suffered physical and sexual abuse and other harms at schools in Labrador operated under the direction of Newfoundland and Labrador and funded by Canada. The Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador partially certified the class action, allowing several claims to proceed while striking certain systemic-negligence and language-and-culture claims with leave to amend; the ruling did not determine liability.

Settlement Claim
The proposed Survivor Class includes people who are or were registered or eligible to be registered as members of Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation or Mushuau Innu First Nation, or otherwise members of the Innu Nation of Labrador, and who attended a school in Sheshatshiu, Old Davis Inlet, Davis Inlet, or Natuashish between March 31, 1949 and August 1, 2009. The action also includes an Innu Governments Class consisting of Innu Nation, Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation, and Mushuau Innu First Nation.
